World Of Islam

World Of Islam:
The Spread of Islam
From the oasis cities of Makkah and Madinah in the Arabian desert, the message of Islam went forth with electrifying speed. Within half a century of the Prophet’s death, Islam had spread to three continents. Islam is not, as some imagine in the West, a religion of the sword nor did it spread primarily by means of war. It was only within Arabia, where a crude form of idolatry was rampant, that Islam was propagated by warring against …

Rabl’a al-’Adawiyya al-Qaysiyya or simply Rabi’a al-Basri was a female Muslim Saint and Sufi Mystic.
Life:
She was born between 95 and 99 Hijri in Basra, Iraq. Much of her early life is narrated by Farid al-Din Attar, a later Sufi Saint and poet, who used earlier sources. Rabia herself did not leave any written works.
She was the fourth daughter of her family and therefore named Rabia, meaning “fourth”. Although not born into slavery, her family were poor yet respected in the community.

Hadeeth And Sunnah

Importance Of Sunnah And Hadeeth.

There are two main fundamental sources of knowledge in Islam – The Qur’an and the Hadeeth. Often people associate Islam with teachings and commandments of only Qur’an; this is true for both Muslims and non-Muslims. However this attitude of ignoring the Hadeeth or Sunnah has lead to many misunderstandings about the already misunderstood way of life, Islam. Best example being that of the perception of Islam promoting hatred. Such doubts and baseless allegations arise mostly due to partial study of Islamic literature.
The Qur’an is the …

Stages Of The Heart

The honored Ustadh Mahmud Sami Efendi used to repeat some hadiths to strengthen belief and enlightenment. By repeating them often, it was if he was suggesting that they be memorized.
One of these hadiths was originally narrated by Ibn-i-Abbas: “One day I was riding behind the Prophet (SA). He commanded: ‘Son! Let me tell you a few words (to memorize). Respect Allah, that is, take care to stay away from what is forbidden. Consider that you will find Him facing you.’ He went on to say ‘Whenever you want anything, ask …

It’s Not Just a Game

The roads are deserted as 170 million people eagerly watch the final moments of the 40th match of the Cricket World Cup 2011 between Pakistan and Australia. Pakistani right-handed batsman, Abdul Razzaq, swings his bat with a flourish and finishes the match with a Four to Australian bowler, J.J. Krejza’s ball. Team Pakistan has won the match by 4 wickets from it’s most formidable opponent!
As the whole country rejoices after the big win from Australia, I look around me and wonder at the nonchalance of some people who claim it …

Mufti Sahabbb yeh kya baat howe?

I confess I was addicted to Big Boss 4, blame it on the local conspiracy mongering anchors and speculative news reporting which constantly undermines democracy. For those interested, I supported Aanchal Kumar – let’s not get into details. So Sweta Tiwari won but it was the diva and “Pakistan ki Beti” not to be confused with Aafia Siddiqui,  Veena Malik who could give Marilyn Monroe a competition with those moves became an instant hit – unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.
But it was …

New Zodiac sign Ophiuchus may change the future of astrologers too

Astronomer Parke Kunkle has set the world of astrology-lovers on a storm claiming in an NBC show that the Earth’s position has changed vis-a-vis the Sun in the last 3,000 years when astrological signs were first allocated and there is a new sign called Ophiuchus which dictates the course of many events.
Now many astrologers themselves are out criticizing the new debate on the Net, aware of the fact that the new sign would bring in more complicated calculations to carry out, before giving out pre-set computer-based Zodiac predictions.
Kunkle, who is …

Attacks on Sufi Shrine in Karachi

The War Within Islam
Legend says that Karachi is protected by the holy shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi. It is said that storms and natural calamities have largely spared Karachi due to the protection offered by the soul of the great sufi saint. But perhaps even more than that perceived status of the protector of the great
coastal city, is the importance of the shrine as a symbol of tolerant, spiritual and mystic version of Islam. This symbolic embodiment was perhaps its misfortune on the fateful day of 7th October.
The tragedy is …

Biased Floods: Unequal Distribution of Damages In Pakistan

Debate is on…recent flood disaster did not take its natural route; flood waters gushed through some areas and saved the others; breaches saved the few and destroyed the majority; conscious altering of the route of flood water had the devastating effect on the poor.
In the backdrop of such an important issue there is a need to look at the evidence available to apprehend whether there were such incidences where actually the course of flood waters altered to save the land and property of those in power and influential.
There are enormous …
